The History of Provence

There are very few other locations in Europe that could ever begin to match the breath-taking beauty that can be found in Provence. Of course, this French region has come a long way to be where it is today. Nowdays tourists enjoy the Mediterranean sea, blue skies, French lavender and beautiful villages, but Provence has not always been that way.

Artefacts have been found throughout the Provence region that suggests that pre-historic man was highly prevalent here. Ancient settlements have been uncovered in large numbers and Provence can boast the fact that it has managed to teach us much of what we know about our early Palaeolithic and Neolithic beginnings.

Much later on, Provence was a part of the Roman empire and again remnants of this historic past can be found across the area. This poor region certainly seems as though it has been pulled in many different directions over the millennia.

Today, Provence is pretty much as French as you could ever get. Lying on the Riviera Coast, the climate here is just about as hospitable as you will ever find and this helps you to understand how early man would have recognised such favourable conditions and decided to call the region their home.
